Regulation

This regulation is temporary, it will be updated following the evolution of the epidemiological emergency, in compliance with the health regulations that will be in force on the day of the race.
The main version of this regulation is the italian version.

Art. 1 ORGANIZATION

The amateur sports association VUT organizes on Friday 29 and Saturday 30 July 2022 the fourth edition of the "Valmalenco UltraDistance Trail", a mountain race in semi-self-sufficiency in the Alps.

Art. 2 GENERAL INFORMATION

The Valmalenco UltraDistance Trail is a semi-self-sufficiency trail running competition along the path of "Alta Via della Valmalenco”, approximately 90 km long and 6000 m of height gap, that starts in Chiesa in Valmalenco, and ends in Caspoggio; maximum time: 24 hours.
The organization is affiliated to FISKY.
Each runner must make sure to have, at the departure from each refreshment point, the amount of water and food reserve necessary to get to the next refreshment point.

Art. 3 REQUIREMENTS

To take part at the competition it is necessary to have experience with mountain environment, good training, wear appropriate clothing for a temperature which can range from -5 to +30 degrees and not to be afraid of heights.
For the single race, upon registration the athlete must provide a personal record of participation to ultra trail or similar competitions.
The competitor, must be fully aware of the environment context and the technical difficulties of the race track.

Art. 4 REGISTRATION

a) Requirements
Only athletes who at the date of the start will have reached eighteen years of age can register and they must have a medical certificate for competitive activity (see art. 5), at least valid until the end of the race. We’ll not accept athletes who are disqualified for doping.

Those without a membership (but with valid medical certificate), have to subscribe FISKY card. All athletes must have a medical certificate suitable for track and field sports, valid at least until the end of the competition (20th of July 2019). Medical certificates, released for other sports, will not be considered valid (football, cycling, skiing, …).

Foreign athletes can take part to the competition if they are members of their country track and field federation. If not, for insurance reasons, when they collect their race number, they must subscribe FISKY showing a copy of their valid medical certificate or self-certificating that they have one pursuant the Italian laws.

If the valid medical certificate or equivalent declaration, is not shown during the registration, it must be displayed when the athlete collects his registration number together with a signed LIABILITY DISCLAIMER (you’ll find it when you collect your race number).

b) How to Register
Registrations will open on the 15th of February 2022 and will close on the 16th of July 2022, unless we reach the maximum number of subscribers before.

Those who will not be eligible to partecipate will receive an email from the organization.

c) Registration Fees

Single race
90,00 €
Registration includes:
- Race number;
- Refreshment along the track;
- Gift bag;
- Meal after the race;
- Gadgets for finishers.

Relay race
120,00 € / team
Registration includes:
- Race number;
- Refreshment along the track;
- Gift bag;
- Meal after the race;
- Gadgets for finishers.

d) Payment
The registration fee must be paid on endu website, by bank transfer or credit card.

e) Cancellation
If unable to attend, the unsubscribe request must be communicated by e-mail to iscrizioni@ultravalmalenco.com.

- refund of 70% of the fee if cancellation is requested by 10 July
- no refund if cancellation is requested after 10 July
The quota will be reimbursed within one month of the end of the competition.
The transfer of the bib number can be authorized - at the discretion of the race management - up to one week before the event, upon payment of 10 euros for secretarial expenses.

It’s not possible to:
- use the fee for the next competition.

In the case of the cancellation of the competition for major forse causes, no refound will be given.

Art. 5 MEDICAL CERTIFICATION

Italians athletes (including those residing abroad) must send a copy of a competitive medical certificate (still valid on the race days) when they register or present it when they collect their race number, otherwise the registration will be canceled and not refunded.

For italian athletes are valid only the medical certificate for competitive activity (ex art. 5 - D.M. 18/02/82) - yellow module - or the equivalent certification with all the diagnostic protocol foreseen for the same decree - white module.

Art. 6 RACE NUMBER AND GIFT BAG

Athletes must pick up their race number and gift bag in Chiesa in Valmalenco on friday, from 09:00 to 12:00 and from 14:00 to 20:00. 

Each athlete has his own race number that is given after presenting a valid identification document with photo, a valid medical certificate and declaration of responsibility released by the organization when he collects his race number, and all the compulsory equipment.

Art. 7 LIABILITY DISCLAIMER

The disclaimer of responsibility is obligatorily signed by every single athlete in the competition office in presence of the organization staff. No disclaimer already signed will be accepted.

Art. 8 COMPULSORY EQUIPMENT

It is compulsory to have the following equipment during all the race:
- Camelbag or water bottle containing at least one liter of liquid;
- Clearly visible race number during the whole duration of the race;
- GPS device that will be delivered by the organization;
- Survival blanket;
- Whistle;
- Mobile phone switched on (high volume);
- Waterproof hooded windbreaker (recommended material: Goretex or similar);
- Long-sleeved shirt or short-sleeved shirt with sleeves;
- Micropile or long sleeves equivalent;
- Long trousers or covering at least knees;
- Cap or bandana;
- Gloves;
- Working headlamp with sufficient charge for at least 12 hours;
- Cup, glass or bottle (no glass at the refreshment);
- Appropriate footwear.
The compulsory equipment must be worn or placed inside race backpack.
​The compulsory equipment will be checked when the athlete will collect the race number, during the competition or immediately after crossing the finish line.

RECOMMENDED EQUIPMENT:
- Waterproof pants;
- Energy bars or solid food;
- Some money for any purchase in the mountain huts;
- Elastic bandage for bandaging.
It is permitted to use walking sticks.

Art. 9 MAXIMUM TIME, GATE TIMES, RETREAT 

The maximum time to reach the finish lane is 24 hours (saturday at 23:00). To warranty security and to help in case of necessity (retreat or injury) the organization will follow the last athlete.

There will be three gates on the track, so who is out of time can go to the arrival point with the shuttle service:

- Chiareggio (33 km) by 7:00 of saturday (8 hours race);
- Alpe Musella (53 km) by 12:00 of saturday (13 hours race);
- Rifugio Zoia (75 km) by 18:00 of saturday (19 hours race).

Athletes who will not arrive within the time limits will be stopped and can’t continue the race. They have to give the race numbers to the employees present on the route, and go to the race village for the delivery of gps.
The medical staff, located on the track, is authorized to stop those athletes who aren’t judged adequate to continue the race. In this case, the athlete has to follow the medical prescriptions, if not he’ll be immediately disqualificate.

The athletes that will be out of time at the gates, the ones who aren’t judged adequate to continue by medical staff and others that want to retire voluntarily, can reach the arrival point with the shuttle service (from Chiareggio and the parking near Rifugio Zoia). For logistic reasons, the retreated athletes, might have to wait a while before reaching the arrival point. In the event that the withdrawn athlete wants to request transport for the return from another point, if deemed possible, the organization can offer - at the expense of the athlete - the service through the means available (shuttles or helicopter).

The means of the organization, not being adequately equipped, cannot intervene in the event of rescue to the athlete who needs medical treatment. In that case, the intervention of the official medical aid will be necessary.

Art. 10 REFRESHMENT

The race is a semi-self-sufficiency trail running competition and the athletes must provide for at least one liter of liquid supply.
Along the track there will be 11 refreshment points:
- Rifugio Bosio;
- Rifugio Ventina / Gerli-Porro;
- Rifugio Longoni;
- Rifugio Lago Palù;
- Rifugio Mitta / Alpe Musella;
- Rifugio Marinelli;
- Rifugio Carate;
- Rifugio Bignami;
- Rifugio Zoia;
- Rifugio Cà Runcasch;
- Rifugio Cristina.

Only competitors with visible race number will have access to the refreshment.
Food and drinks must be consumed at the refreshment spot. It is forbidden to drink straight from the bottles provided by the organization and any waste must be disposed in the appropriate bins.
Athletes must have enough food and liquids to reach the next refreshment point.
At the arrival the organization will provide for liquids and a hot meal that will be delivered in Caspoggio, after showing the meal ticket.
On the path there are several streams and fountains where it is possible to stock up on water. During the entire competition it is possible to stop and refresh at the alpine refuges on the route. Any purchase of extra food and drink in shelters is a load of the competitor.

Art. 11 ASSISTANCE DURING THE RACE

Assistance to athletes (family or team) is allowed only in the refreshment points.
It is prohibited to follow athletes trough the race.

Art. 12 BAG DEPOSIT

The bags destined for the exchange of Chiareggio and upon arrival in Caspoggio can be delivered during the bib collection, or starting at 9 pm at the start.
Inside the facilities set up at the arrival at the Caspoggio sports center, changing rooms and bag storage will be available from 20 on Friday. Scholarships may be collected no later than midnight on Saturday, upon presentation of the race bib. It is recommended not to insert valuables in the bags; in any case, the organization is not responsible for any theft, loss or damage to the bags or their contents.

Art. 13 START

Competitors must present themselves at the start in Chiesa in Valmalenco by 9.30 pm. At 11.00 pm the start will be given.

Art. 14 TRACK

Valmelenco UltraDistance Trail track is classified as “Bollino Rosso: EE Itinerario per Escursionisti Esperti” (Itinerary for Expert Hikers). The itinerary requires abilities to move on particular soils, arduous tracks (slopes with rocks and detritus).
The route of the Valmalenco UltraDistance Trail follows this itinerary:
Chiesa in Valmalenco, Torre Santa Maria, Ciappanico, Alpe Son, Rifugio Cometti all’Alpe Piasci, Rifugio Bosio, Alpe Mastabbia, Alpe Lago, Alpe Pirlo, Alpe Pradaccio, Laghetti Sassersa, Passo Ventina, Rifugio Ventina, Rifugio Gerli Porro, Chiareggio, Alpe Fora, Rifugio Longoni, Alpe Entova, Alpe Paluetto, Rifugio Palù, Bocchel del Torno, Alpe Campascio, Rifugio Musella e Rifugio Mitta, Vallone di Scerscen, Rifugio Marinelli, Bocchetta Forbici, Rifugio Carate, Bocchetta di Fellaria, Rifugio Bignami, Campo Moro, Rifugio Zoia, Rifugio Cà Runcasc, Rifugio Cristina, Alpe Acquanera, Piazzo Cavalli, Caspoggio.
In the case of bad weather or impracticability of one or more tracks, alternative routes will be shown during the pre-race briefing.
No marks will indicate distances. Athletes must strictly respect the race route avoiding shortcuts. Athletes who don’t respect the race route will be disqualified an will take all the responsibility for any taken risk.

The distances of the relay race:
1° relay runner: 33 km 2896 D+
2° relay runner: 40 km 3326 D+
3° relay runner: 15,5 km 545 D+

The change zones:
1° change Chiareggio, km 33
2° change Diga di Alpe Gera, km 73

At the time of the change, the relay runner must necessarily pass to the next relay runner the GPS tracking device provided by the organization.

Art. 15 SECURITY AND CONTROL

In the most significant points and in any case in every refreshment points, the organization provides an emergency calling place. Medical staff will be present at arrival.
The rescue spots are intended to help any person in danger through organization or affiliated staff. The race doctors are authorized to stop any athlete considered in danger. Rescuers are authorized to evacuate by means considered suitable the runners judged to be in danger. If necessary, the race doctors, will appeal to the official sanitary rescue, that will supplant in the management of any assistance needed, with all the appropriate resources, including helicopter. Eventual expenses arising from exceptional resources (helicopter) will be paid by the athlete, according to the current regulations. Any athlete who requests medical assistance, must observe and respect any taken decision.

Art. 16 ENVIRONMENT

The race is set in a natural mountain environment, with delicate ecosystems and protected by SIC and ZPS. It’s prohibited to throw trash, to pick up wildflowers or to disturb wildlife. Whoever will be surprised damaging the environment will be disqualified ad will incur in severe sanction regulated by the municipality. 
To avoid to damage the environment, no glasses will be delivered at the refreshment point. Each athlete has to provide for their own glass or bottle.

Art. 17 WEATHER

In case of major atmospheric events (heavy fog, blizzards and storms), at any time, the organization has the right to change the routes to avoid potential hazards and any inconvenient to athletes. Any variation will be communicated to the athletes by our staff.
The organization can suspend or cancel the race if the weather conditions will be dangerous and become a risk for the safety of athletes, volunteers and rescuers.
In case of interruption or cancellation of the race no refund will be due to the participants.

Art. 18 DISQUALIFY AND PENALTY

For the following reasons athletes will be disqualified:
- Not passing at the check points;
- Shortcutting the track; 
- Littering the track;
- Not assisting athletes in trouble;
- Insulting or intimidating organizers or volunteers;
- Using any means of transporting during the race;
- Refusing to undergo to medical checks during the race;
- Refusing to submit to the compulsory equipment check;
- Not having a headlamp, a windbreaker, a thermal blanket or container for 1 liter of liquid.

The disqualify can be applied directly on the race course.

There is also a penalty of 30 minutes for the following reasons:
- Not having a whistle, extra batteries, long-sleeved shirt, pants, covering at least the knee, cap or bandana, gloves, glass or bottle and not exposing the race number.
The disqualification will be applied immediately when the infraction will be ascertained.

If the athlete doesn't return the GPS tracker to the organizers, must pay a 150 euros fee.

Art. 19 PRIZES AND AWARDS

There will be no cash prizes. There will be prizes in-kind for the first 5 men and first 5 women. Each competitor who completes the race within the maximum time will receive a “finisher gadget”.
The awards will take place on saturday at 10pm in Caspoggio.
For no reason the prizes will be sent in advance or delivered. 

Art. 20 COPYRIGHTS

By entering, participants authorize the organization to freely use, without territorial and time limits, still and moving images, that portray them during the Valmalenco UltraDistance Trail race.

Art. 21 DECLARATION OF RESPONSIBILITY

The voluntary registration and subsequent participation to the race, indicates the full acceptance of these rules and any eventual change.
By registering, the participant exempts the organizers from any liability (civile e penale), for damages to persons and/or property caused or derived by him.
